The Year We Shared

As the first warm and rainy days of summer welcome campers to the woods and as the long-absent smells of cook-outs scent the air in the evenings, another school year is coming to a close. For some of us, this year has rushed by with little warning. For others, each day dragged on. Regardless of our sense of time, our time is almost up.

The ending of this year marks the end of many things for the EMHS community. For some, this is the end of their first year of high school. Some students end their last year as underclassmen, some, their last year "under the Seniors." Some students mark the end of their time at EMHS. Some teachers find they've stuck it out to the end of their first year of teaching, others end their time here with this year. No matter what your situation, you will be able to look back with satisfaction at a year shared in community, a community which though it may grow and change as students come and go, will always be firm.

During this year, the EMHS community has shared many shaping experiences. We rallied together for the Christmas Fund Drive to raise money and awareness of our school. We shared the anticipation and debate of the elections and gathered together in the auditorium to witness the historic inauguration of our nation's first black president. Our school held its first lock-in and its first bonfire. The Juniors held a lovely banquet, Tour de France Sour la Seine and showed their hilarious movie, The 26th Mile. Tennis girls won their championship and girls soccer made the State Tournament.

Through all these experiences, we have changed, growing as a community. When the Seniors walk down the aisle of the Lehman auditorium and finally take their places as EMHS alumni, when each of us scatter to live our separate summers, we will take this learning with us. We'll leave this place to walk in different directions, but we'll remember the path we shared this year.
