Biography

The Windsock serves as Eastern Mennonite High School's ultimate source of news and therefore strives to deliver stories about the students and community to the ignorant and unaware. As the school's newspaper, the Windsock will continue to provide immediate, precise information to the community via the newly formed, internet format. Below, the editors have written the mission statement of Eastern Mennonite High School to give people an idea of the direction EMHS is focusing on.

"Within the context of a rigorous curriculum, Eastern Mennonite School joins with the home and church to call students into relationship with Jesus Christ for a lifetime of acquiring the knowledge, skills, compassionate attitudes and behaviors needed for serving the world community.

As a community of Christian people, we actively explore the relationship of Christ's teachings to academic disciplines and to all of life.

Regular activities are scheduled in our curriculum to help students grow spiritually as well as intellectually. Daily chapel services, Bible classes, Spiritual Renewal Week twice a year, Community Service Day, small group Bible studies, and discussion of Biblical values in numerous classes are just some of the ways we encourage students to become active members of the EMHS community of believers. In study, worship, or play, students are challenged to integrate faith with life--to learn and apply Biblical standards to life's decisions.

Furthermore, within our total school curriculum we design classes and other activities that encourage students to develop a range of interests and provide opportunities to grow in reading skills, insight, curiosity, analytical reasoning, creative thinking, organizational strategies and ability to complete tasks.

In all these activities and within interpersonal relationships, we expect students to display compassion, courage, commitment, unselfishness, patience and self-control."

Interests

My name is Whitney Showalter, I’m a senior, co-editor of the EMHS Windsock, and a major Fight Club fan. When I’m not giving the other editor Kyle a hard time, I like to spend quality time with my Playstation, my knitting needles, or any novel I can lay my hands on (or, of course, my friends). Oh, and my most favorite thing in the whole world is the aurora borealis (or northern lights). Hello, ladies and gents, my name is Kyle Smith, and I am fulfilling the role of co-editor along with the esteemed Whitney Showalter. Like my co-editor, I hold the title of senior and immensely enjoy the movie "Fight Club," but "Gladiator" will certainly overcome the former in any comparison. I find that elements of school often consume the majority of my time, but I greatly enjoy writing, reading, and traveling when times permits. You can locate me in the gym throughout the week, and you may very well find me paintballing on a pleasant weekend. Warning: I will kill for Chinese food and I cannot ignore an opportunity to stargaze under a transparent canvas of night sky.
